Rebranding

For us here at ableMove, the last 12 months have been anything but quiet. We have used the time to develop five new fantastic products that will not only be vital for wheelchair users when we all start travelling again, but can be used in everyday life to support independent living. The products we have developed are incredibly versatile as well as affordable. Our new range is available to order now via our new look website. Whilst travel still remains very close to all of our hearts here at ableMove and every member of our team is desperate to get back to flying again and having more global adventures, we are also truly excited to be sharing our range of new products with you and learning how they help you explore your own new possibilities.

Our Story

Our Founder, Josh Wintersgill founded ableMove Ltd in 2017 after having a lightbulb moment whilst travelling. Josh was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy shortly after birth, but was determined from a very young age, not to let his disability hold him back from achieving his dreams. Josh has always been a dedicated traveller and has explored the globe and had many wonderful adventures along the way. As Josh’s SMA advanced however, Josh began to become more aware of the restrictions and barriers he was facing when travelling by aircraft as a wheelchair user. You may be surprised to learn that there is no globalised standard on how wheelchair users should be lifted on and off aircraft and Josh was experiencing what countless other wheelchair users have been describing for many years. A haphazard approach to lifting wheelchair users, huge disparities in service between countries and individual airlines, airports and ground crew, and most shockingly no consistent training or qualifications on transferring wheelchair users on and off the aircraft. If you would like to know more about this and read our experiences of wheelchair users in our aviation report please click here. https://www.ablemove.co.uk/release-of-wheelchair-customers-in-aviation-report/

If you have ever met Josh, you will know just how gritty and determined this young man is, and more than deserving of the several awards he has won, including The UK’s Disabled Entrepreneur Award run by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation and Leonard Cheshire. Josh returned from one particular trip, having decided that a solution was needed and got to work designing a product that he knew would help make his travelling experiences more comfortable, safe and dignified. The ableSling was born. Josh teamed up with the well known easy family of brands, and the easyTravelseat™was launched, which quickly became a vital piece of equipment for any wheelchair user when travelling by aircraft.

Independent Day to Day Living

Josh and the team at ableMove soon realised, despite Covid-19 and the effect this has had on the global travel industry, that the ableSling was being used by wheelchair users for so many other activities in their day to day lives. Having an in-situ sling that is comfortable and discreet has meant that Josh began hearing stories from people from all walks of life and all parts of the globe about how the ableSling was allowing them to live independently to a degree they hadn’t thought possible. The ablesling has also allowed wheelchair users to try a whole range of activities that previously wouldn’t have been possible, for example sailing and skiing. We are all about exploring new possibilities here at ableMove and the ableSling is allowing wheelchair users to do just that.

Occupational Therapists

We have worked very closely with occupational therapists over the past 12 months whilst developing our new range of products and we have even created a section of our website dedicated to occupational therapists. OT’s are the people who work every single day with wheelchair users and have told us that our ableSling and new range of products aren’t just a luxury item, they are a necessary piece of equipment for any wheelchair user. We have provided all the information on our website that any OT will need when applying for funding for our products and have taken the hard work out of writing funding applications. This means occupational therapists can spend more time doing what they do best; helping wheelchair users successfully live their lives as independently as possible.

Thank You

Keep a close eye on our website and social pages over the next few weeks. We will be running a series of articles highlighting our new range of products, opening up possibilities you may not have imagined.

From the whole team here at ableMove, we just want to say thank you for sticking with us through the past year. Hearing stories from our customers about how our products have changed lives for the better makes the hard work so worthwhile. Keep sharing your pictures and stories with us as everyday it is you who inspire us.
